Mr. James E. VanAntwerp was appointed as the Division Technical Director (DTD) for Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport in October 2008. At this time, he also became a member of the Senior Executive Service. As DTD, Mr. VanAntwerp oversees the test and evaluation, in-service engineering, maintenance and repair, fleet support and industrial base support for undersea warfare systems, undersea weapon systems, countermeasures and sonar systems. He directs NUWC Keyport operations at a number of remote facilities located throughout the United States.
Mr. VanAntwerp began his Federal Service career in 1981 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF), Bremerton, Wash. Prior to his current assignment, Mr. VanAntwerp was the Engineering and Planning Manager at PSNS & IMF, accepting that appointment in March 2003. In this position, he was responsible for the technical specifications and repair procedures for all non-nuclear aspects of ship modernization and repair. He was instrumental in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard conversion to mission funding and integration of the Bremerton and Bangor sites.
From 1997 until 2003, Mr. VanAntwerp was the Waterfront Support Manager, where he managed the fleet introduction, in service support and disposal of today’s technologies on several classes of ships. From 1995 to 1997 he was the Structural Division Manager where he streamlined processes and significantly improved quality and turnaround time for products. From 1992 to 1995 he was the Project Engineering and Planning Manager, leading the engineering recovery effort for the Trident availability.
During his career, Mr. VanAntwerp has been the recipient of numerous awards for Outstanding Performance, Special Act awards and several leadership awards from local community organizations. In 2004 he was awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his work with NAVSEA at the corporate level and for his success at refocusing the Engineering Department on sustainable improvements.
Mr. VanAntwerp earned his bachelor’s of science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan.
