François Marie Duthoit is R&T director for DCNS, the leading defence supplier in France for shipbuilding and naval systems.

Scientist by training, and engineer by experience, from the grandes écoles stream (Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie de Paris), with a post-graduate thesis on Polymer Acoustic Sensors, François is also part of the French Naval Reserve, and qualified as navigation officer and mine warfare officer. Although his experience includes few years with E. Lacroix as chief scientist for the counter-measures business, François spent most of his career with Thales before joining DCNS. Starting as a research engineer with magnetics and sonars, he then turned into a Technical Director within the Thales Naval Division (in Sydney first, then in Sophia Antipolis and Paris). During the six years of his posting in Australia, François also held various positions as General Manager of Australian Sonar Systems Pty Ltd, Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Australian Maritime Engineering Cooperative Research Center, and Chairman of the Management Committee of a Master Course in software engineering at the University of Technology.

In his current job with DCNS, FMD is in charge of funded and self funded R&T, including national & international cooperation, and is building the Technical Strategy Plan for the group.

A former government organisation, DCNS has been granted a private company status (government owned) in 2003, with another big step in 2007 by which Thales transferred its French naval activities to DCNS, acquiring at the same time 25% of the shareholding.

François is married to Anne, organist and also skilful manager of their four teenagers.
