VADM J. Guy Reynolds Memorial Award first recipient announced

Following the establishment of the MAST VADM J. Guy Reynolds Award fund, MAST’s organizers are pleased to announce the recipient of the first ever award.

Thomas Jefferson High School will officially receive the award (a $5,000 contribution to equipment) during the Educational Outreach plenary session at MAST Americas (0830”1030 hrs, Wednesday 23rd June).

Dr. Evan Glazer, Principal of Thomas Jefferson High School made this statement:

“Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology appreciates being recognized as the inaugural recipient of the Maritime Systems and Technology Vice Admiral J. Guy Reynolds Memorial Award.

“We share Admiral Reynold’s legacy of devotion to excellence, as we endeavor to inspire students to achieve success in math, science, and technology through innovation and discovery. The generous donation of the MAST organization will help ensure that we can continue to build on our success, providing students with a challenging learning environment, and allowing them to reach their full potential.”

MAST Americas featured paper: “Hybrid AUV/Glider for Shallow Water Applications”
— Author: Dr. Alain Maguer, NATO Undersea Research Centre, Italy

This paper will present the enhancements recently brought to an existing shallow-water AUV named the ‘Folaga’ jointly designed in 2006 by the University of Genova (ISME), GraalTech and NURC.

The Folaga was initially built for performing vertical dive to do oceanographic measurements between long periods of navigation at the surface. The recent developments performed by Graaltech in collaboration with NURC, are providing the Folaga with enhanced hybrid capabilities, such as both in the same platform, AUV, gliding and hovering capability. The enhanced Folaga (eFolaga), which has also been fitted with a payload capability developed through a joint collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS), is therefore capable of performing different types of missions such as for example oceanographic missions, bottom mapping survey and marine mammals survey or to act as a gateway buoy when equipped with an underwater acoustic modem.

The main features of the eFolaga are described in the paper. Hence, a propulsion capability allowing it to perform as an AUV has been added to the design and tested at sea providing the Folaga with a speed of the order of 4 knots during 6 hours. Recently, the Efolaga (Enhanced Folaga) was fitted with different payloads such sidescan sonar for bottom survey operation as well with optic sensor. The last optic payload configuration will be using the unique hovering capability of the eFolaga (equipped with control pitch/yaw thrusters) to perform vertical profiling that not currently possible with current existing glider. Eventually, wings were designed, fitted and tested at sea on the eFolaga providing the eFolaga with gliding scope almost comparable to current gliders on the market.

This paper forms part of the Undersea Operations & Capabilities session entitled “AUV Technology” on Wednesday 23rd June.
